Don’t look now, but the city’s future as a premier center of commerce is in grave danger: A good chunk of its central business district, Manhattan’s Midtown East, is rotting, and no one has lifted a finger to stop it. At least, not until now.

Last month, Mayor Bloomberg’s staff finally moved to breathe new life into the commercial heart of the city by officially floating a plan to update zoning laws there.

That raises two questions:

• What the heck took so long?

• Will foes with narrow interests be allowed to scuttle the plan — and put the city’s economic future at risk?
